Between two worlds, between two eras
Born in 1863 and dying in 1944, Edvard Munch experienced two centuries, two eras, two tides of creative influence. Springing forth from the roots of 19th century artistic trends, Munch’s work fits into and reflects the symbolism of the dawn of the 20th century, the era on which he made a considerable impression. The exhibition also focuses on the importance that the artist placed on the notion of cycles. Life, death, rebirth, as well as Bergsonian and Nietzschean vitalist concepts inspired him to create, among other works, the Frieze of Life and a series of canvases that must be understood in their entirety.
An exhibition of rare richness
Thanks to the participation of the Munch Museum in Oslo, the Musée d'Orsay is exhibiting no fewer than a hundred works, paintings, sketches, studies, and engravings produced by the Norwegian artist. Such a profusion not only allows us to perceive his creative process but also his influences and the evolution of his style. Thanks to a playful and educational museography, the thoughts and works of Munch are made more easily accessible to us.
