Japonisms 2018 Kohei Nawa, Throne
Posted in Museums / Exhibits le
Great pieces of art push boundaries into areas of modern expression or call back to ideas and images from the past. They help us to see where we have been, as well as where we are going. In some cases, the very best pieces can do both. The Throne at the Musee du Louvre is a great example of this.
The Throne is part of Paris’ Japonisms 2018 series that celebrates Japanese art, culture and identity. This piece is a great way to end the year because it marries the contemporary elements of the more modernist shows with aesthetics from the more historical exhibitions. The gold leaf throne takes inspiration from the designs of Japan’s past, with a stunning gold leaf layer that glistens beneath the gallery’s glass pyramid. But, the structure has been 3D printed. This bold sculpture remains on display in the city until February 18th. Visitors are encouraged to see it while they can.
