Magical Unicorns at Cluny Museum
Posted in Museums / Exhibits le
It is hard to know when The Lady and the Unicorn was first woven. The difference between the time of conception and the time of completion of this 6 piece tapestry could be vast. Historians place it around 1500, viewing it as one of the most important pieces to come from that period between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The age of this piece makes it seem as though it would be far removed from anything created today. Yet, the images and symbolism are still clear and important today, especially around the image of the mythical unicorn.
That is why it is so important that not only did the Musee de Cluny bring the tapestry back to France, they have created a new exhibition around it. The Magical Unicorns exhibition explores the role of this creature and its meaning in these ancient works. It provides an insight into the longevity of the image and a great chance to see the tapestries up close.
The show continues until the end of February.
